The Two by Four Cheese Grilled Cheese
Abstract
Building off of our earlier experiment, we wanted to up the bacon and cheese factors by at least 50%. This is why we created the Two by Four: two times the bacon, four times the cheese. That’s right, a four cheese grilled cheese! The key to this sandwich is finding sources of cheese and bacon that is not just “more of the same”. Enter: bacon marmalade and cheese bread. These ingredients mean you can add in tomatoes, arugula and basil without over stuffing this sandwich.
Hypothesis
By combining two types of bacon with four types of cheese, we will create a grilled cheese sandwich worthy of being the foundation of any meal.
Ingredients for the Two by Four Cheese Grilled Cheese
The following ingredients make one sandwich. Double or triple ingredients depending on how many sandwiches you would like to make:
- 2 slices of cheese bread
- 2 tbsps bacon marmalade
- 2-3 slices of bacon
- Note: use turkey bacon or tofu bacon for a healthier alternative
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup goat cheese
- ½ cup shredded Havarti cheese
- ½ cup shredded basil
- ½ cup crushed tomatoes
- ½ cup arugula
Methodology
To create the two by four grilled cheese, follow these instructions (estimated total cooking time 10-15 minutes)
- On a stove, heat skillet on medium-low heat
- Fry bacon in pan until it’s crispy
- Remove bacon and conserve drippings
- Spread bacon marmalade on the inside of one slice of bread
- Combine cheeses, bacon and into a sandwich
- Place sandwich on frying pan in bacon drippings
- Flip sides once bread has become golden brown and cheese is melting
- Remove from frying pan once cheese is melted completely
- Serve with your choice of side dish
Conclusion
There is a lot going on in this sandwich, but the two types of bacon and four types of cheese come together really well. The challenge comes in assembling all of the components. The taste is cheesy and salty, but not overbearing.
Originally, we did not recommend a side dish in the ingredients. This was due to us having the sandwich twice: once with a side of tortilla chips, another time with sweet potato fries. We leave the choice to you, as both the pairing works well.
